Dear Members of PLPA,
Thank you to everyone who participated in our recent survey regarding the Pleasant Lake Protective Association’s (PLPA) sponsorship and funding of an annual fireworks show. The complete results are attached for your review. We achieved a record 61% response rate - an extraordinary turnout
compared to the typical 25% average for community surveys.
The survey results reveal that our membership is divided on this issue. This put the PLPA Board in a challenging position as we evaluated how to move forward. In our deliberations, we carefully weighed several key factors:
Environmental Impact: While studies highlight the general dangers of fireworks, our specific, 20-minute professional show is a minor pollutant compared to other sources such as runoff and the use of fertilizers.
Safety Mitigation: Several on the Board believe a professionally produced event could reduce the use of consumer fireworks by individual residents. This was debated as PL’s fireworks show cannot occur on the actual 4th of July due to the demand the providers have from much larger accounts. These store-bought alternatives pose a far greater threat to the lake’s safety and environment and minimizing them remains a priority.
Costs: The cost of the annual fireworks display reached $10,000 this year. Is this the best use of our funds, given the challenges facing the watershed and the lake?
Wildlife Concerns: There are many peer-reviewed scientific studies about the harm of human generated light and noise on wildlife and pets. Those with dogs know how they react; draw your own conclusions.
Ultimately, a majority of the Board agreed that a “protective” association should not sponsor or fund a fireworks display. Consequently, the Board has voted that the PLPA will discontinue its sponsorship and funding of the fireworks event after the July 1, 2026 show.
Note that this does not mean the tradition will end. Moving forward, the event can be organized and funded by an independent group of citizens (yet to be formed) who wish to contract a professional, licensed fireworks provider. This mirrors the model currently used by the Lake Sunapee community.
We recognize that no decision on this highly emotional issue would satisfy everyone. The Board has worked diligently to find a balanced path forward that respects our protective mission while preserving the community traditions we all value.
Sincerely,
Doug Baxter
President, PLPA
