Our Mission & History

Since 1969, PLPA volunteers have worked to protect Pleasant Lake through water-quality monitoring, wildlife stewardship, and community education across the watershed.

Mission

PLPA, founded in 1969, is dedicated to protecting Pleasant Lake and its watershed through research, monitoring water quality and wildlife, and educating and involving watershed residents as to their role in protecting the lake.

  • Regularly tests the water quality of Pleasant Lake and its tributaries.
  • Sponsors the NH Lakes Lake Host program, inspecting boats at the Elkins boat launch for invasive species.
  • Conducts a volunteer Weed Watchers program to survey the lake for aquatic invasive species.
  • Monitors a pair of Common Loons breeding on the lake, protected by state and federal law, and supports other wildlife on and around the lake.
  • Advocates for lead-free fishing and safe boating practices.
  • Manages the PLPA website and educational publications for Pleasant Lake supporters.
  • Has sponsored Colby-Sawyer student watershed studies.
  • Has engaged in an upcoming watershed management plan.

PLPA is run by volunteers and supported by donations.
