A sample from the cyanobacteria bloom observed at the Slope 'n Shore beach on June 30th was sent to Greenwater Laboratories in Florida for analysis of the four toxins that this species, Dolichospermum lemmermannii, is known to produce. All toxins were below the level of detection.
While this is great news, please remain vigilant, as cyanobacteria are known to produce toxins when the cells are dying. It is always a good idea in particular to keep small children and pets away from any suspected bloom area. Remember, toxins can be present even when a bloom is not visible!
